| Shelled Hazelnuts & Hazelnut Butter |
Hazelnut Butter has a sweet and rich taste and is a popular addition to entrees and side dishes. Raw hazelnuts have a sweet taste naturally like most raw nuts. Because they are not dry roasted, they do not have any of their oils coming out to coat them, so grinding them does not have the same results as grinding dry roasted hazelnuts. The texture is not "butterlike". It can be spread on toast etc., but it won't coat like the dry roasted will. The raw is better for it's standup qualities. It's wonderful in baked goods or if wanting to keep the raw in the foods, it's great in bars and raw food desserts. It makes a great binder for dried fruit when combining dates, coconut, and other ingredients for raw bars. Mixtures with the raw hazelnut butter using cocoa/chocolate and other ingredients will enhance all the flavors. The dry roasted is more runny and is best for other applications besides spreading. The raw hazelnut butter should be refrigerated even before opening. Because the other is roasted, it can be at room temperature before opening.. The hazelnut tree is said to have spread to Italy, France, and Spain from Asia by way of ancient Greece. The ancient Greeks and Romans ate hazelnuts. Turkey is the world’s leading grower of hazelnuts. Other large producers include Italy, Spain, and Eastern Europe. In the United States, Oregon grows the majority of hazelnuts.
USES Hazelnut Butter is easily spreadable for sandwiches, snacks/appetizers
and is an excellent addition to recipes. It is also a wonderful compliment
to jams, chocolate and crackers. Hazelnut Butter is especially known for calcium, folic acid, folate (lowers blood level of homocysteine, a compound linked to heart disease risk), and protein. Please see our "nutrition" page for additional information.
